Brewing news UK: Greene King announced directors' shareholdings

Greene King plc announced that, on 8 March 2006, 100,000 shares in the company were acquired by Kleinwort Benson (Guernsey) Trustees Limited, as trustee of the Greene King Employee Share Trust. As a result of the acquisition, Rooney Anand, Justin Adams, Mark Angela, Ian Bull and David Elliott, who are beneficiaries of the trust, have acquired an interest in the 100,000 shares in the company. This brings the number of shares owned by the Greene King Employee Share Trust to a total of 475,822.

Greene King has been brewing beer and operating pubs for over 200 years. Founded in 1799 by Benjamin Greene, it has grown steadily from its base in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk to become a leading pub retailer and ale brewer in the south of England.

In July 2005 the company completed the acquisition of T D Ridley & Sons Limited, the Essex brewer, for £45.6m, including £8.8m of debt. The Ridley's business consists of 73 pubs, a brewery at Hartford End near Chelmsford, a distribution centre in Ipswich and a quality free trade business. The press release giving further details can be found in the News section of this website. In August 2005 the board announced an agreed takeover of The Belhaven Group plc, one of Scotland's oldest and largest regional breweries which owns 271 pubs and brews Belhaven Best, the most popular draught ale in the Scottish on-trade. The offer became unconditional in September 2005. Belhaven now trades as a separate division of Greene King.
